Drawing and Me--Am I an Artist?
Drawing has been my pastime since I was very little; as far as I can remember, I started drawing when I was about three. My older brothers also loved drawing, and we used to always compete with each other to come up with the coolest imaginary characters or most interesting mangas. As the youngest among the three boys, I wasn't as good as my brothers so they often teased my poor imagination and creativity. Because of this, I gradually stopped drawing to create something original, but instead, started drawing just popular manga and video game characters and stuff. I started to be known as a good "artist" among my friends and classmates at school.
In Japan, we all have to take mandatory visual art classes up until middle school and learn little bit of everything about art. We learn from basic things like drawing, coloring, and painting to really random stuff such as carving, woodblock printing, pottery and stuff. We get to try so many different mediums even just for drawing or painting, and our art teacher makes us (or our parents) pay for those pricey stuff every time we use new mediums.
As a school student, I never enjoyed my art classes because I did NOT like the "express yourself through your arts" part of the class; I felt extremely uncomfortable showing others what is in my mind through my art. I think it was because of my brothers laughing at my drawings in the past. I don't mean to blame my brothers for my poor creativity and imagination, though, because I also badly criticized their art work (^_^;), but it was unfortunate that I couldn't freely, naturally come up with creative ideas anymore like I used to as a little child. As a result, despite my passion for drawing, I never got an A on my art class during my middle school years...
